Travel Guide Overview to San Diego

Using a travel guide, while exploring all the things to do in San Diego will help you have one endless day of fun after another. Consider a 15 passenger van rental to move about in comfort.

Aside from the usual jitters of driving in an unfamiliar city, San Diego is not so much one city as it is a number of separate small communities joined together by freeways.

This means that the major attractions you may plan to visit on your trip are not places you can walk to, but places you must drive to- sometimes driving a bit of a distance. Southern Californians are used to this way of getting around, but it can be a bit of a culture shock for visitors, especially driving rental cars in San Diego.

Interstate 5 runs north and south while also connecting Orange County to the north and Tijauna,Mexico to the South. Freeway 8 traverses from east to west. Going east heads for Arizona and west takes you to our beautiful beaches.

Without a cheap affordable car rental and travel guide, Fodors travel says that while,"public transportation has improved a great deal in the past decade...Making connections to see the various sights is time-consuming" without a car. That's why your Becker car rental is a crucial component of having fun and enjoying all the things to do in and near San Diego on your Southern California vacation. Our cheap car rental rates and clean, safe vehicles make renting a car an enjoyable, hassle-free experience.

Of course, there's always public transportation. The San Diego trolley runs from Old Town thru Mission Valley to Mission San Diego. Visitors may buy a two-day trolley pass, but even the trolley tour of popular tourist attractions moves so slowly that, of the eight attractions/things to do on the tour, you'll likely only see four or five of them during the two days. The Coaster, a commuter line, travels from Oceanside to downtown San Diego. And, of course, the bus covers the entire county. But, as with all public transportation systems, it can be time consuming to plan a trip around bus schedules, and missing your connection can put a serious crimp in your sightseeing style. Biking is an option for short distances. Bike paths are well designated and runs throughout the city. And what about taxis? Hiring a taxi for anything but the shortest distances will eat up your travel budget very quickly. Taxis are not a good option with San Diego attractions being separated by freeways as they are. It's simply too expensive for most people to consider as a travel option.

Travel Guide Essentials for California Driving

  • In an emergency, dial 9-1-1 for police, fire, or emergency medical services.
  • Your out-of-state or foreign driver's license is normally valid for driving in California if it's valid in the country or state of issue.
  • The default urban speed limit is 25 miles per hour (M.P.H. -- i.e. 40 K.P.H.); freeway speed limits are usually 55, 65, or 70 M.P.H. (approximately 90, 100, and 110 K.P.H. respectively).
  • Red colored curbs mean "don't park here under any circumstance". Blue ones mean "only park here if you're disabled and have an approved permit to park in disabled spaces". Green colored curbs usually have a short time limit (15 to 30 minutes) on parking.
  • It's generally legal to turn right on a red light as long as you stop first, there's no conflicting traffic, and no sign saying "No Right Turn On Red". It's almost never legal to turn left (i.e. against oncoming traffic)

  • You and all your passengers must wear seat belts, and children must be secured in an appropriate child passenger restraint (safety seat or booster seat) until they are at least 6 years old or weigh at least 60 pounds.
  • You can be charged for driving under the influence (DUI) if you are found to have a blood alcohol percentage of 0.08% or greater. This is a serious criminal offense in California.
